CHRISTMAS EVE – “Wrapped Up In Love”

Tonight is the culmination of our series and our waiting! It all comes down to this. To HIM; born for us!

1In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Luke 2:1-7

May the Lord bless your celebration o f the birth of the Savior, Jesus, through Whom you, too, are “wrapped Up In Love!”

“The Clothing of the King” – Advent & Christmas Sermon Series

For our Advent and Christmas journey we are going to look at various aspects of and the importance given to different clothes in Scripture.

Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.

Mark Twain

This may seem odd or trivial, but clothing in the Bible is more than a tangential detail. It often has significant implications for revealing God’s plan of redemption.

Consider: God covered Adan and Eve’s shame and nakedness. He designed and meticulously instructed the Israelites on the priestly garments of the Tabernacle. The Savior Himself was wrapped in swaddling clothes (and later was crucified naked on the cross).

We are going to look at some stories of “The Clothing of the King.” Stories that describe a wardrobe at once splendid and sin-stained, with fabrics that reveal who we are and cover us through His love and redemption. The clothing of the King is both tattered and worn and also incorruptibly glorious – which He freely gives to us!

A New Normal

The prophecy of this Child’s birth is fulfilled.

The shepherds are gone. Perhaps life is returning to some kind of normalcy.

But it’s still not “normal.”

How can it be?

Jesus is not a “normal” child. This is not a “normal” family. Perhaps this “new normal” is all there is to look forward to.

Or is it?
What do we do in the “letdown” after Christmas? Is it a disappointment? Mundane? “Normal?”
How can it be?

The fact that Jesus came changed everything – for the better! There is a “new normal” but it is to be celebrated – every day!

Mary’s Advent / Our Advent

We will begin a new sermon series for Advent and the Sundays after Christmas: “Mary’s Advent / Our Advent”.

In this series for Advent and Christmas we will look at “Mary’s Advent” for the time leading up to, including, and just following Jesus’ birth, as well as our own Advent in the process.

I hope you’ll join us!

Sweet!

Solomon is known for being the wisest man who lived (apart from Jesus, of course).

How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

Psalm 119:103 (esv)

But being wise doesn’t always translate to being godly.

In fact, some of the wisest people foolishly separate themselves from the Source of that Wisdom – God!

Solomon lost track of the more important thing – seeking God and remaining in His Word instead of worldly wisdom, which is fleeting.

May we always seek and remain in His Words, which are sweeter than honey!

Scriptures

  • 1 Kings 3:4-15
  • Psalm 119:97-104

Nunc Dimittis

Typically the Sunday after Christmas is…not well attended.

Lord, I am your servant, and now I can die in peace, because you have kept your promise to me. With my own eyes I have seen what you have done to save your people, and foreign nations will also see this. Your mighty power is a light for all nations, and it will bring honor to your people Israel.

Luke 2:29-32 (cev)

It seems anticlimactic and the excitement of Christmas is over.

Perhaps it seemed that way for Mary & Joseph, too.

The shepherds were gone, the birth has happened and now comes…regular life.

But the coming of Jesus gives us a different take on Life.

As Simeon said soon after Jesus’ birth, he can now go in peace having seen God’s salvation in Jesus!

Wow!

That is exciting! That is meaningful! That is LIFE!

Thanks You, Lord!

Let us now, also, depart in the peace that comes from Jesus!
