Commissioning and Installation Service for Deaconess Becky Jungklaus

Pastor Scott & Deaconess Jungklaus on Call Day in St. Louis, April 26, 2023

On February 5, 2023, LifeBridge issued a Divine Call to Rebecca (“Becky”) Jungklaus to serve as a missionary-at-large Deaconess.

On April 26, 2023, at a service at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, that Call was realized and ratified through the Church.

On Sunday, November 26, 2023, at 3:00 PM, Deaconess Becky Jungklaus will Commissioned and Installed in this ministry through a Rite at LifeBridge! This will be followed by a reception!

This is a big deal and very exciting!

Becky, who many know as an ASL teacher at LifeBridge and beyond, serves many, though primarily the deaf community all around!

The deaf population is an enormous mission field, with well over 90% of deaf people either not knowing or not believing in Jesus!

Becky is working to change that; teaching and sharing the saving Gospel of Jesus!

You can reach Becky by email at bjungklaus@lifebridgesealy.com.

The Rev. Dr. John Reinke (who will be Commissioning & Installing Deaconess Jungklaus); another Deaconess graduate, Deaconess Jungklaus, and The Rev. Mike Newman, President of the Texas District of the LCMS.

What is a Deaconess?

We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 (a theme verse for LCMS Deaconesses.)

Deaconesses are women who serve as professional church workers. They support and assist pastors as they share the Gospel and serve God’s people through works of mercy, spiritual care and teaching the Christian faith. They serve in congregations, on the national and international mission field, and in a variety of other settings and service organizations particularly to women, children and God’s people with special needs.

They are trained to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ through works of mercy, spiritual care, and teaching the faith.

“Deaconess” comes from the Greek word διάκονος (“diakonos”), meaning “servant.”

Their motto is:

Working in faith
Laboring in love
Remaining steadfast in the hope of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Join us for the short service at 3:00 PM and stay for the free reception following!

Some of this information came from the LCMS website here and here.

“You Did For Me”

A summary of the message theme for the occasion.

Church work is not for the faint of heart. It’s not all joy and roses, rainbows and smiles. Ministry is tough.

There is a saying, “ministry would be a lot easier if it weren’t for all the people.”
I would venture to say that 99% of church workers have been hurt deeply by the congregations and people they serve – and 1% of them have just started their ministry.

The King will reply, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. Anything you did for one of the least important of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’

Matthew 25:40

The expectations are high. The no-win situations are numerous. The disappointments with your decisions are often and loud. The lies told to your face (even if they are lying to themselves first) are glaring and constant. And the challenges to keep yourself in the Word is real. You don’t get to worship like others, because you are working. You don’t get fed because you are feeding. You don’t get comforted because you’re comforting. You are encouraged to share but judged if you do. It is lonely and draining.

And in our text we have a passage meant for all Christians but often ‘delegated’ to church workers: feed, give drink, welcome, cloth, visit. Care for those who need it; even if they drain you. Even if they challenge you.

Because here is the reality: serving others is serving Christ!

That helps! Seeing people that may not always act like Jesus, look like Jesus, or live like Jesus are still loved by Jesus and deserve to be served like Jesus!

And when that’s still too difficult to get us through, here’s the kicker: we don’t serve because we want to be counted as the faithful sheep. We do it because He served us: humbly and fully. And He continues to still. Even when we are the difficult ones. When we are the ones attacking and disgracing. When we are acting unloving and uncaring.

We serve because He serves. We love because He loved. Not to gain salvation but because we have salvation and can’t help acting otherwise.

Keep the Servant’s heart. Keep the Servant’s love. Keep the Servant, Jesus – and share Him through your continued service of others!

That’s true for everyone, not just church workers!

Transformers

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:2

We are beset by the Fall; having a body and mind that is corrupted and in decay with the rest of Creation.

But that reality isn’t permanent.

When Jesus offered His Body as a living sacrifice, He reversed that curse; transforming and conforming back to Himself.

Through Faith in Him, we also are no longer to be “conformed to the world” but instead “transformed by the renewal of our minds” and able to offer our bodies as holy, redeemed, living sacrifices in all we do!

How amazing is that?!

God is good!

Ima Dogg

Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.

Matthew 15:27b

The story of Ima Hogg, the “First Lady of Texas” is well known; sometimes not for her enormous generosity, philanthropy, and blessings to Houston and Texas, but because of her unfortunate name.

But we can take that which may be seen as a detriment and be extremely blessed by it!

In the Gospel for today, Jesus tells a women that “it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” The women doesn’t dispute that she’s a dog, but responds with one of the greatest statements of faith and truth in Scripture; “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”

Crumbs of God’s grace is more than enough!!

With that truth, I can proud say, “Ima Dogg!”

Everyone

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Romans 10:13

Sometimes we feel like everyone and everything is against us; like the weight of everything is going to crush us.

But we have an almighty God who lifts our burdens and carries our sorrows. A God we can call upon to help us in any need and at any time. And the promise is that, “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved!”

Saved from sins. Saved from burdens. Saved from death. Saved for eternity!

EVERYONE who calls on Jesus!

What great news! What great comfort!

Come!

Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever.

Psalm 136:1

Coming off of Hosea, we hear from another prophet who covered much of the same ground. But Isaiah shares more about the coming Savior and Messiah and the new reality ushered in by Him.

“Come” and share in something beautiful, eternally nourishing, and free! “Come” and share in Truth, forgiveness, and life itself. Put away falsehoods and all that comes with them.

“Come!”

What a beautiful invitation! What a beautiful reality! What a beautiful Savior!

“COME!”

HOSEA – Living in the Good Law of God

I desire faithful love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God instead of entirely burned offerings.

Hosea 6:6 (ceb)

Israel’s destruction will take place. It’s punishment will happen. Pain and suffering will be inevitable.

But that won’t be the end.

They will repent and God will restore!

This will happen with a remnant in their return, but ultimately in the sending of the Messiah, Jesus; through Whom all is restored!

Praise God for His goodness, His love, His restoration, and His Chosen One, Jesus!
May we seek and see His haling and restoration in Him all our days!

HOSEA – Judgement Made, But Victory Through God, the Savior

I desire faithful love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God instead of entirely burned offerings.

Hosea 6:6 (ceb)

Hosea 13:14 is quoted in 1 Corinthians 15. There part of the passage is explained and fulfilled: yes, death and the grace have some success, but the ultimate victory is ours through Jesus!

The kingdom of Israel didn’t know that ultimate fulfillment, but they did know that God was their Savior in Egypt, and that should have guided their heart and actions.

Yet, they didn’t, and they paid a heavy price.

Victory over death and the grave – and everything else – has been given to us through Jesus! Let us live in that joyful, glorious, and everlasting reality!

“Thank You, Lord, for that victory in Jesus!”

HOSEA – The Heart of the Father

I desire faithful love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God instead of entirely burned offerings.

Hosea 6:6 (ceb)

Chapter 11 is the most tender one in the book. It shows a loving Father whose heart breaks at the rebellion of His beloved Israel and what is in store. It shows that He loves and will restore His people in the end.

We see this restoration not just in the return of the remnant later, but ultimately in Jesus, who restores with right relationships and for all time!

“Heavenly Father, create in us new hearts, like Yours, and remind us of the joy of our salvation in Jesus, where the results of our prodigal hearts are forever reversed.”

HOSEA – Beware Prosperity!

I desire faithful love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God instead of entirely burned offerings.

Hosea 6:6 (ceb)

There is something to be said for the strength that comes from a persecuted Church. In times of distress, it’s much easier to call upon the name of the Lord. Conversely, when times are prosperous and good, we often forget God. We forget His goodness; His grace; His blessings. We can easily fall into complacency and loose sight of Him.

This happened during some of the prosperous times in Israel and, in it, they forgot God (just as He warned).

“Lord, in good times and bad, may we always Call upon and depend upon You!”

HOSEA – Sow the Wind? Reap the Whirlwind!

I desire faithful love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God instead of entirely burned offerings.

Hosea 6:6 (ceb)

It seems too harsh for us to consider God punishing the ones He loves. But most of the time, this punishment is simply the natural consequences of our stubborn idolatries, allegiances, desires, and addictions. They are the result of God “giving us over” to what we say we want.

You want to serve other gods? Go, be in their care!

You want to lust after others? Deal with the failed relationships and diseases that follow.

Should we choose our way rather than God’s, He won’t stop us; and woe to us if that happens!

“Lord, forgive us when we demand our own way and bring us back to Yours – always!”

SCRIPTURES

HOSEA – True Repentance & Trust

I desire faithful love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God instead of entirely burned offerings.

Hosea 6:6 (ceb)

Chapter 6 looks promising: God’s people repenting!

But this repentance is neither heartfelt nor long-lived.

And right after we see that their trust is grossly misplaced: not in God but in the strength and allegiances they have with other nations.

This is idolatry!

Trust in God! He is the only One who can, has, and will continue to save! He is the only One in whom we are to trust; and He is always faithful!

For us the question becomes: “will we trust in the One He sent us, Jesus, or is the seeming strength of other people or things?”

May our Trust in Jesus be ever true – and our repentance sincere when we fail!

HOSEA – Consequences of Unfaithful Priests

I desire faithful love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God instead of entirely burned offerings.

Hosea 6:6 (ceb)

Before getting to the unfaithfulness of the people, God has some choice words of judgement to His priests.

They are not interceding for the people to God, but interceding for themselves to false gods! They are oppressing God’s beloved rather then helping them. They are leading people astray rather than to God.

And the results are disastrous; not just for the priests, but for Israel, too!

“O LORD, send us faithful leaders who point people to Jesus! Point people to You!”
