Listen to Him

And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!”

Luke 9:35

Today we celebrate Transfiguration Sunday – how God showed His approval of Jesus through His transfiguration with Moses and Elijah – and most importantly through His words, “This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!”

And, we are blessed with the Sacrament of Holy Baptism for Gabriel Sánchez, too!

‘X’ Marks the Spot for BridgeKidz!

Kids, come join us as we find treasure along the Romans Road and learn how salvation through Jesus is the ultimate treasure!

We will travel on a journey from sin and separation from God to peace and eternal life with Him, learning life-giving verses along the way!

An ‘X’ (or cross!) marks the spot for the greatest treasure anyone could ever find – eternal life with Jesus!

Here’s our itinerary:

March 6 — “Quicksand” — Romans 3:23

We will learn God is perfect and His ways are perfect, but every one of us have sinned (disobeyed acted in ways that fell short of God’s perfection). But we’re not stuck in quicksand because Jesus saved us!

March 13 — Walking in the Dark — Romans 6:23 a

We will learn that everyone has sinned and that sin comes with a consequence (punishment for doing the wrong thing). The consequence for our sin is that it separates us from God. Thankfully, God didn’t want that separation, so Jesus brought us back to Him!

March 20 — A Light Up Ahead — Romans 6:23 b

We will learn that even though we deserve the punishment of separation from God because of our sin, Jesus came and took our consequence for us, so we don’t have to experience it!

March 27 — Clear Path — Romans 10:9

Salvation (being free from the consequences of our sin) comes from God. He gives it to us freely when we believe in Jesus, His Son. Faith in Jesus means we are saved!

April 3 — A Place to Rest — Romans 5:1

By believing in Jesus and putting our faith in Him, we are made right with God. This gives us peace because we know that even though we make mistakes, Jesus paid for all those mistakes on the cross!

April 10 — A Special Palm Sunday Lesson!

April 17 (EASTER!!) — TREASURE! — Romans 8:38-39

Jesus is our treasure that no one can ever take away! His resurrection from the death and life means eternal life for us – a treasure no one can ever take away!

God’s Inexpressible Gift

God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more than enough to do all kinds of good things for others.

2 Corinthians 9:8 [cev]

Today we look at God’s calling for us to be faithful stewards of His stuff – and the joy and blessings that entails!

  • Malachi 3:6–12
  • 2 Corinthians 9:6–15

Blessing Bags

Join us to decorate Blessing BAGS! (NOTE: This is a different service project from “Blessing Boxes” we’ve done before.)

We want to make creative bags that will later be filled and given to someone to bless them.

Here’s what we’re going to do…

  • Bring yourself and your creativity (bags and decorating supplies will be provided).
  • Enjoy the others! Talk, laugh, and decorate the bags.
  • Take a bag home.
  • Pray and think about who needs to be blessed.
  • Fill the bag with items that will bless that person. (Keep it simple and have fun with it!)
  • Deliver the bag to the person with a smile!

Bring a Here we will each decorate a small canvas bag.

That’s it!

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Love to Death

Then Jesus said to his disciples: “If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross and follow me.”

Matthew 16:24-25 [cev]

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and all who are adherents of Hallmark know what that means.

But Valentine was a martyr. What does that mean for us as Christians? As witnesses of Jesus? As martyrs for Him?

ASH WEDNESDAY, 2022

Join us on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 2, 2022, at 6:00 PM for Ash Wednesday worship and the Imposition of Ashes.

NOTE the change in time from previous years: 6:00 PM, NOT 7:00 PM.

The purpose of repentance is not to be swallowed up by guilt. It is to be freed from a dark and destructive direction by God’s wakening Word, and to be sent on a new path by the sin-conquering Savior. It’s what we all need.

THE REV. MIKE NEWMAN
PRESIDENT OF THE TEXAS DISTRICT OF THE LC-MS

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our Lenten journey, which culminates on Easter Sunday with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.

On that night at worship we mark our foreheads with an ash cross and, as that cross is marked, we are reminded of our sins. As we are marked by Jesus’ sacrifice; we are drawn to the realization that “[we] are dust, and to dust [we] shall return” (Genesis 3:19).

On Ash Wednesday and throughout the season of Lent, we also focus on our sins, on repentance, and on our broken world; seeing how we and all of creation has fallen far short of God’s intention and glory.

But we do not despair because we look to the certain hope that is ours through the forgiveness of our sins given to us freely by God’s grace through faith in Jesus.

THE IMPOSITION OF ASHES

Everything we experience in life is finite and temporal, including our own lives. As the Scripture reports, we came from the dust of the ground and we will return to the dust of the ground. (Genesis 3:19 & Ecclesiastes 3:20)

For many centuries the use of ashes has symbolized repentance. Imposing ashes in the form of a cross on the forehead of the worshipper on Ash Wednesday is a vivid reminder that such a person has been redeemed by Christ the Crucified. It is a symbol, not primarily of our sins, but upon the forgiveness of them through faith in Jesus.

As Ash Wednesday is a somber time as we remember that Jesus willingly suffering and death come as a result of our sins and His love. As such, at the conclusion of worship that day, we exit the church in silence.

“Repentance slays selfish pride, turns us from sin’s siren call, quiets arrogant arguments, tames out-of-control egos, pulls us back from distraction, leads us to restoration of relationships, places us on the pathway of walking with God, and restores our hearts with compassion and grace.

We need this personally. We need this as schools and congregations. We need this as a District. We need this as a Synod. We need this as Christ’s Church.”

The Rev. Mike Newman
President of the Texas District of the LC-MS
